In today’s world, portrayed by rapid technological advancements, constant communication, and an uncompromising pursuit of achievement, the quest for completeness often seems unattainable. Nonetheless, the desire for fulfilment and integration in our lives remains a basic human need. To be sound and complete, we must pursue balance and contentment while cultivating inner harmony in all our lives. Achieving a cohesive and well-balanced life involves aligning our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual elements. Here, we explore the path to wholeness in life and how to attain it.
Redefining Wholeness: Embracing Imperfection
It’s common to misinterpret wholeness as perfection or flawlessness. It would be more accurate to describe it as a state of fullness, where every aspect of our existence is balanced. It entails accepting our flaws and virtues, happiness and sadness, accomplishments and setbacks, and realizing that every facet is essential to our journey. To be human means embracing our imperfections and working towards growth and integration while staying true to our intrinsic nature. Furthermore, we should be able to watch and witness the inner workings of the body and mind without any justifications.
From the moment we embark on our life journey, beginning at birth, we pass through various stages. Initially, we identify ourselves by learning from everybody and our environment. Our foundational beliefs and perceptions take shape during this period, developing a personality that keeps changing, yet we are never satisfied. To overcome that, we need to be balanced, centred and complete. We are constantly searching for more and more from the outside to fulfil our never-ending desires. The search for completeness must be within oneself.
The Journey from Personality to Individuality
Understanding the difference between personality and individuality is essential in the context of the unique consciousness inherent in every living being. Wholeness is characterized by being mentally healthy, materially, emotionally and spiritually. Embodying this wholeness means recognizing and balancing the interconnectedness with the above in completeness with life and being itself. Your very nature in such a beingness forms a part of increasingly larger spheres of wholeness.
The Role of Consciousness in Achieving Wholeness
This concept of wholeness, or achieving a hundred per cent of being, is a state of mind. It is awareness, a thought, a level of consciousness. We must be sure we have attained the full spectrum of life’s values. A leaf on a tree is an integral part of the entire tree, and the whole tree is reflected in it. Similarly, a finger is healthy and content because it is associated with the entire body, experiencing a subtle sense of being sustained by the whole and understanding that it is a vital, inseparable part of the body.
In the case of the human mind, the health of a personality is more for the outer world, where you are required to prove who and what you are. However, the fulfilment of individuality depends on the wholeness of its consciousness, conjoining life’s inner and outer aspects, which is what we eventually seek in life. Simply put, we are all seekers in some way or another, but a spiritual seeker precisely knows what he is seeking. A person should be fluid, neither strictly extroverted nor introverted. One should be capable of embracing both gracefully. Balancing the inner and the outer worlds provides the most excellent ecstatic experience.
The Human Condition: Tension and Fulfillment
The will to achieve wholeness is inherent in every living creature, but conscious efforts prevail only in humans. It is why humans live in a state of tension; this negative state dies down when the longing for wholeness is fulfilled. This tension of wanting more than one needs is the disease of humanity, and proper health lies in experiencing and realizing wholeness.
Wholeness is achieved only by becoming fully conscious of oneself; you should constantly and unquestioningly introspect your body and mind. Selfless love is required outwardly, while meditative awareness, continually watching your thoughts, feelings and actions from moment to moment in the present, is inward. By embracing both, you can attain a state of wholeness. Practising mindfulness allows us to be present and fully engage with our experiences. It cultivates a deeper connection with ourselves and the world.
We are often divided by modern life, juggling many obligations and roles, losing sight of our true selves. We may feel disconnected and imbalanced by the demands of work, family, social commitments, and personal goals that pull us in different directions. This disarray can lead to anxiety, a sense of purposelessness, and emptiness. Wholeness is attainable only through deliberate and purposeful effort. Maintaining our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being is essential and crucial for holistic health.
Embracing the Journey to Wholeness
Opening up to our inner world is the first step toward becoming whole. It involves turning inward and observing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to understand how they influence our experiences. Self-awareness enables us to recognize the aspects of our lives that need attention and are out of balance. Second, one must find meaning and purpose in life to be whole. It means identifying our contributions, passions, and abilities and aligning them with our actions and goals. Purposeful living provides direction and inspires us to live life to the fullest, and once that is acquired, experienced and realized, you remain unruffled in this wild world of ours.
Discovering wholeness has significant and far-reaching benefits. Wholeness offers a sense of contentment and inner peace independent of external conditions. It strengthens our ability to handle life’s challenges and fosters a deeper understanding of life’s complexity and beauty. Being whole helps us live more joyfully, authentically, and purposefully. It establishes intense connections with ourselves and others, creating a positive ripple effect that transforms our lives and communities.
The pursuit of wholeness serves as a recall of the value of inner harmony and balance in a society that often prioritizes outward achievements and financial success. We can embark on a transformative journey toward wholeness by developing self-awareness, authenticity, mindfulness, selfless attitude, emotional integration, holistic well-being, connection, and purpose. Although each person’s journey is unique, at its core, it is about embracing every aspect of who we are and living a life that aligns with our true selves. Achieving wholeness in life is not about attaining perfection; instead, it involves accepting the entirety of the human experience and leading a whole-hearted, more purposeful, and fulfilling existence.
