What is Karma?

Karma has many definitions, especially in Buddhism and Hinduism.

An example of karma is in the sayings “what goes around comes around” or “what you sow is what you reap.” Karma is the force that arises from a person’s actions. Even though I do not believe it, it is claimed that karma continues the cycle of rebirth and, ethically, karma helps define the type of rebirth a person experiences.

In Hindu thought, every deed carries a consequence because of a universal cause-and-effect system. It is the law of psychology. The intention behind an action leaves a subtle impression (samskara). It is neither an accidental action nor its outcome.

Karma has three dimensions:

  1. The huge collection of all the past karma a person has.
  2. The past karma, which is currently affecting the life conditions a person is currently experiencing and cannot be altered.
  3. A person’s present active choices, which offer a person free will and affect their future.

Karma Yoga is a system of yoga that uses selfless actions, devoid of ego and attachments, to liberate a person from past karma and, therefore, offers a new interpretation of the karma system.
